Period predictions are the heart of Lilly Tracker, and many users wonder exactly how the app arrives at its dates. The honest answer: it's not magic, and it's not a one-size-fits-all formula. It's math based on your own cycle history. Here's how it works — and how to make it more accurate.
When you first install Lilly Tracker, the setup wizard asks for your average cycle length (default 28 days). The app then calculates your next period as: last period start date + average cycle length. Simple and predictable.
Your period length and luteal phase length are also set at startup, with sensible defaults of 4 and 14 days. All of these values can be changed at any time in Settings → Period & Ovulation.
The luteal phase is the time between ovulation and your next period. For most women it's fairly constant — typically 12 to 16 days. Lilly Tracker uses it for one crucial calculation:
Ovulation day = Cycle length − Luteal phase length
For a 28-day cycle with a 14-day luteal phase, ovulation is predicted on day 14. Because the luteal phase is more consistent than the follicular phase for most women, this formula tends to give a more stable ovulation estimate than a simple mid-cycle guess.
Manual cycle settings work, but your body is not a textbook. That's where "Use Average Values" comes in. When you enable it in Settings → Period & Ovulation, the app stops relying on the manual numbers and instead analyzes every completed cycle you've logged.
It calculates three personal averages:
These averages update automatically after each completed cycle. The more cycles you log, the more personalized and accurate the prediction becomes.
Consider two users:

The experienced user's prediction reflects actual patterns — maybe her cycle is really 27 or 31 days, not 28. That's why long-term users consistently report better accuracy, and why we always recommend keeping "Use Average Values" enabled.
If your cycles vary widely (PCOS, perimenopause, postpartum, stress-related changes), predictions become estimates rather than precise dates. Lilly Tracker still adapts: it uses your logged history and recalculates after every period. For cycles that vary by 10 or more days, treat the predicted date as a window rather than an exact appointment.
Two tips for irregular cycles:
A common source of confusion: the app says "Period 3 days late" but you're not late at all. This almost always means your actual cycle is longer than the value the app is using. Either adjust the cycle length manually, or better — enable "Use Average Values" so the app learns from your real data instead of a fixed default.
If you are pregnant, the app cannot detect it. It continues predictions based on your cycle settings until you log a new period or adjust parameters manually.
Sometimes you know something the math doesn't. If you detected ovulation with a test kit or BBT chart, you can override the calculated date: tap the gear icon on the Ovulation Card → "Set ovulation manually" → pick the date. To revert to automatic calculation, choose "Calculate ovulation day" from the same menu.
Predictions are a guide, not a guarantee. The more Lilly Tracker learns about your body, the closer it gets — and the less often your period will surprise you.
